Nació en Rosario el 14 de mayo de 1905, y murió en Buenos Aires el 13 de octubre de 1981. Sus padres eran de origen italiano: su padre — Napoleón Berni — era sastre nacido en Italia, y su madre — Margarita Picco — era argentina hija de inmigrantes italianos radicados en Roldán, un pueblo de la provincia de Santa Fe, a 30 km de Rosario. Berni nació en calle España 288 (entre Salta y Catamarca). Una placa con bajorrelieve indica el sitio.
